Crafted, LA's Artisans Spot
September 30, 2018
Craft fairs are all the rage here in California, and across the country for that matter. Consumers are increasingly interested in unique, artisan goods over store items from corporate enterprises. Near the San Pedro apartments for rent, you can find Crafted: a celebration of all things artistically designed.
So, what exactly is Crafted? How does this marketplace differentiate itself from similar venues? Here’s everything you need to know about Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles.
Concept and Creation
The idea behind Crafted is to create a large-scale artisan marketplace. While that in itself isn’t a new concept, their goal of making this market permanent is. Most craft fairs are pop-up venues that come and go like the wind. Instead, Crafted would like consumers to have the option of shopping for artisan products year-round.
Their home rests in 1940’s era warehouse called “Warehouse No 10,” which has been classically restored to its former beauty. This location houses works from over 100 individual artists in the Los Angeles area ranging from food to artwork and crafts. All items are handmade, available 52 weeks a year, and entirely open the public.
Not only does this give visitors a unique shopping experience, it offers local artists the ability to make themselves and their work known. Aside from viewing and purchasing works, visitors can also attend classes from the artisans themselves. It’s an immersive experience and a must-attend for any lover of craft goods.
When and Where
As the name suggests, Crafted makes its homes in the Port of Los Angeles. You can find it next to the Global Gifts UNICEF Shop and Brouwerij West bar off of Miner Street. The official address is:
112 E 22nd St
San Pedro, CA
You can get your fill of crafty delights on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. The store is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all three days. As of now, there are no special weekday events.
It’s also worth mentioning that there is no cost for admission. Like any other store, you simply walk in and purchase anything you would like. Parking is also free, which is great news for an L.A. address. You can plan your visit and get direction via this page on their website.
What to Expect
Aside from the multitude of artisan crafts available, visitors can also enjoy live music during their shopping experience. Special events feature different artists from time to time, and food trucks are always ready to whip up a delicious meal. There are also daily demonstrations that feature the 100+ artists working on their crafts or teaching customers how to make their own.
Examples of workshops include:
- Candle making
- DIY linen spray
- Wine and dine painting classes
- Hand knitting
- Leather bracelet making
- A water marbled silk scarf class
- Earring making
- Paint pour clocks
The marketplace itself has a wide variety of fantastic products ranging from apparel to stationary and paper goods. In apparel, numerous clothing items and accessories are available for purchase. There are hats, t-shirts, bracelets and more.
An art, illustrations, and photography section contains hundreds of unique works from various artists. Food makers create delicious preserves and tasty treats like drunken cake pops, not to mention a bounty of organic teas. Bath bombs and wonder creams are found in the beauty section, while one-of-a-kind dishes and sculptures await you in the ceramics section. Several Indian/Western-themed adornments are also in the sculpture section.
There’s an enormous home décor section that includes everything from shabby chic furniture to industrial-era oddities. The jewelry corner is gigantic, as well. Finally, there are toys, games, pet products, paper goods, and stationaries in abundance.
You won’t find a single item at Crafted that comes from a major retailer or corporate entity. Everything is 100% artisan made and wholly unique to the artist that made it. That includes Crafted’s newest edition, Brouwerij West.
This craft brewery is connected to the main building through Warehouse 9 by a series of food makers and a community kitchen. The distillery features a lineup all their own from an unfiltered Pilsner to an oatmeal stout. Each brew is as unique as the crafts next door, so drink up.
