Holiday Shopping in San Pedro
December 16, 2018
San Pedro has been a shopping hotbed since it opened in 1821. Back then, it was a harbor town focused on foreign trade. Today, it stands as one of the most unique shopping experiences in Downtown L.A. From any San Pedro apartment for rent, you can shop your heart out this holiday season.
Badfish Clothing Co.
Badfish is located in the heart of Downtown San Pedro’s shopping district. It features a wide selection of skate/surf punk style clothing as well as records and paintings. Local artists well-known in the streetwear scene often have their clothes for sale on the racks, but you can also ask for custom designs and in-house screen-printing to create something unique. Finally, as you might expect, this is the best place to purchase a new skateboard.
California Girl Boutique
Only a year old, this storefront gem already has a dedicated following. Owner Lily Cruz sells her line of curated women’s apparel that focuses on casual, fun designs. You can browse this one-of-a-kind clothing shop on Gaffey Street as well as online, but the in-store experience is preferred thanks to the family-run nature of the business.
Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles
It’s impossible to mention shopping in San Pedro without talking about Crafted. This enormous weekend market features an eclectic collection of handmade goods from local artisans. While walking through the warehouse on East 22nd Street, you can find everything from jewelry to candles as well as unique eats.
Hosted by the San Pedro Art Association, this shopping opportunity also incorporates classes and workshops that range from leatherworking to jewelry making. Exhibits and galleries are often on display, as well. Plus, you can enjoy a craft beer creation at the connected Brouwerij West building.
Glamorous and theatrical are two words you could use to describe the clothes sold at Dramatique. Everything here is larger than life, including designs by owner Martine Klein. The store carries everything from hats to dresses and lingerie, both new and resale, offering a wide selection of items to choose from. The experience is heightened by store associates that double as stylists, helping you pick out the perfect outfit for any occasion.
Founded in 1991, Drop-In Gifts remains the number one place for greeting cards, gifts, and collectibles. While you might be able to find similar wares at Hallmark, it’s the owner of this store that makes the difference. Ask anyone in San Pedro, Darka Klaric as the unique ability to pick out the perfect gift. Simply tell her who you’re shopping for and she’ll select the ultimate gift for that person. Several call it supernatural, but Klaric simply has a knack for understanding people.
The Grand Emporium
The Grand Emporium was once a high-end gift shop, but has since been transformed into a hub of pop-culture. Classic vinyl records, vintage books, and movies line the walls amongst the coolest memorabilia from numerous fandoms. The store’s proprietor, Chuck Klaus, bought out the gift shop when his wife suggested he sell off his enormous record collection. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, and more than happy to help you find what you’re looking for.
The Leather Shop
The Leather Shop is a two-fold store. On one end, you can purchase ready-made leather goods from wallets to bags. On the other, you can take advantage of leatherwork services from the owners that allow you to customize and even create unique items. They also offer DIY kits that make the perfect gift for leather-savvy or crafty friends.
Veteran cartoonist Rennie Nunez is known for his work with Universal Studios, Warner brothers, and Filmation. Nowadays, he and his wife sell custom artwork, silk-screening, and embroidery out of Renzwear. They also offer plenty of apparel as well as services for business logos.
San Pedro Surf & Sport
Renowned since the 1970’s, this family-owned shop has been the go-to spot for surfers in the South Bay. With a wide variety of surfboards, wax, wetsuits and accessories, Surf & Sport has everything you could possibly need to ride the waves. They also offer clothing from major brands like Billabong, Element, and Volcom.
This is Jean Grisard’s quality sneaker shop, which was created as an answer to the lack of diverse footwear in San Pedro. Famous brands from Adidas to Bathing Ape and Supreme line the walls, and you can almost always find a few rarities if you ask. To help you complete your look, Street Sole also offers plenty of apparel and brand name hats.
