The Spectacular LA Fleet Week
August 16, 2019
It’s what you might call a Southern California tradition, and one that the residents of the San Pedro apartments for rent know all too well. LA Fleet Week, the summer spectacular right in LA’s Harbor, is coming back for another installment at the end of this August:
“LA Fleet Week® is an annual, multi-day celebration of our nation’s Sea Services held on the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles over the extended Labor Day Weekend. Free to the public, our event features active duty ship tours, military displays and equipment demonstrations, live entertainment, aircraft flyovers, and more..."
The fun will be diverse, multi-faceted, and, of course, intense! There’s plenty to go around, so if you’re looking for something to do at the end of the month that’s suitable for the whole crew, this is the event for you. Ready to learn more about what’s in store? Read on, as we bring you all the details on this upcoming summer extravaganza.
Fleet Week Basics
Alright, let’s say for some reason you’ve never heard of Fleet Week before. It’s certainly possible, and if that’s the case, you’ll need to know a bit more about what Fleet Week entails. It’s not that hard to grasp, actually. Through the efforts of the Fleet Week Foundation, the Port of Los Angeles, in conjunction with the military, puts on what can only be described as a gigantic Labor Day Weekend party for all to enjoy.
That’s amazing enough in and of itself, and Fleet Week provides plenty of entertainment to enjoy, regardless of age. What’s more spectacular, though, is the fact that it’s all free. That’s right — you don’t need tickets, reservations, or cash to attend Fleet Week and have a great time. All you need to do is know what’s going on so you can make plans on when to attend. On that, we’ve got you covered. Events will be taking place over several days, and include the following.
Thursday, August 29th
REBOOT Military & Veterans Job Fair: the dedicated veterans of our country need employment following their military service, and this event is one of many resources designed to help veterans start exploring their opportunities after life in the military. It’ll be taking place from 10:00AM to 1:00PM on the Battleship IOWA.
The LA Fleet Week Welcome Party: They’ll be kicking off Fleet Week the right way with this amazing welcome party which will be taking place from 6:30PM to 11:00PM on West 6th Street. This will be the “big shebang” to get Fleet Week off on the right foot, so if you’re all-in on the festivities make sure you attend.
The Top Gun Screening: Few military-inspired films are as riveting as Top Gun, and this 80s classic will be screened in all its cheesy, nostalgic glory during the Fleet Week Welcome Party. The location, if you’re interested, is the Warner Grand Theatre, right on West 6th Street.
Friday, August 30th
Event Hours: Friday Fleet Week will start bright and early at 8:30AM, and you can head to the harbor to check out some of the exhibitors who will be in attendance and get yourself a taste of those fine Fleet Week events, including the ship tours and delicious food truck delicacies.
Los Angeles Maritime Museum: The LA Maritime Museum is known far and wide, and they’ll be holding some special events for Fleet Week on Friday, taking place from 10:00AM to 5:00PM.
LA Fire Department Historical Society: Similarly, the LA Fire Department Historical Society will be offering up some unique events for guest to enjoy on Friday, from 10:00AM to 4:00PM, including a look at the Fire Boat Restorations they’re so well-known for.
Obstacle Course Competition: This should require little explanation. The best of the best gather to test their skills against one another at the obstacle course setup by Outdoor Footprint. Be there, or be square.
Wilmington Welcome Reception: The Wilmington Welcome Reception will take place in Banning Park, starting at 5:30PM and ending at 10:00PM.
Military Appreciation Concert: Taking place on the Fleet Week Main Stage will be an epic concert to help show off the tremendous love and support for the military that’s endemic in Los Angeles. The concert will take place from 6:00PM to 10:00PM, and there will be a special performance from Cheap Trick at 8:00PM, so don’t miss it.
Saturday, August 31st
STEM Expo: Science is a big deal, and getting youngsters involved is paramount to our nation’s future success. The STEM Expo is the place, and it will be including a few special events like the High School Robotics Competition, to make things interesting.
Aerial Demonstrations: Want to see helicopters and aircraft doing their thing? This is the place to check them out. The Aerial Demos will show off the skills of talented pilots and crew, so be sure to show up and support.
Evening Concert: Would it be a rockin’ Saturday without an amazing concert? This set of performances will be a tribute to the splending 80s, so if you’re feeling nostalgic, be sure you catch a few of the bands.
Sunday, September 1st
Believe it or not, the Sunday schedule of events is almost identical to Saturday’s, with the exception being the Evening Concert. Instead of the 80s tribute, you’ll be getting a riveting DJ set from DJ MissNinja.
Monday, September 2nd
The last day of Fleet Week will be notable for the 5.3-mile race that will be taking place over the Vincent Thomas Bridge. “Conquer the Bridge,” as it will be called, will be a chance to test your mettle, so consider signing up to see how you rank against the other runners.
