Your Guide to Earth Day Events
April 17, 2019
Every April, the world gathers together to show their demonstration and support for environmental protection on Earth Day. While the official celebration takes place on April 22nd, you can find dozens of fantastic volunteer opportunities in an around the San Pedro apartments. Here are some top-rated conservation and educational efforts you can join in on this year.
White Point Nature Preserve
The White Point Nature Preserve is celebrating with a day full of volunteer activities the whole family can take part in. Rangers will guide volunteers through various green outreach efforts as well as workshops designed to help you keep your home green throughout the year. This even takes place on April 20th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Film Screening with the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy
After cleaning up the White Point Nature Preserve, stick around for live music and family-friendly activities. There will be a plant sale, hands-on art projects, and a guided walk through the grounds. Afterward, a screening of FREE SOLO, winner of the 2019 Academy Awards, will play. The cost of the screening is $10 a ticket.
Head over to Point Fermin Park from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on April 20th and you can take part in Trashblitz. This volunteer opportunity brings the community together to clean up the park on over 100 sites. Data collection will identify the top brands and types of plastic being littered, as well as support local efforts in the creation of stricter waste reduction policies (namely stopping single-use plastics at the source).
On April 28th, Garden Church in San Pedro will hold their Earth Day Expo between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. Their focus is on how bees help the local ecosystem, but the event also provides valuable composting information and activities for children. Vendors and a farm stand provide plenty of food, which you can enjoy while listening to live music.
Tall Ship Adventures’ Earth Day Sail
Historic Tallships offers plenty of chances to get out on the water in unique ships, but their Earth Day sailing venture places an much needed focus on marine mammals and birds in the area. Fauna and local rehabilitation efforts are also part of this sailing tour. It’s a unique insight into marine conservation, which you can take part in on April 20th from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Aquarium of the Pacific
On both the 27th and 28th, you can take part in the aquarium’s 19th annual tribute to Earth. Several educational booths offer everyday tips to protect the planet, while the aquarium offers hand-on demonstrations. The cost to attend is $29.95 for adults and $17.95 for children under 11.
Day Chalk Art Challenge
Hosted by the King Harbor Association, this all-ages event encourages individuals to create custom canvas tote bags. Participants receive non-toxic chalk and paint to decorate the bags any way they would like. The event is free to the public and includes a special visit from On the Wing Falconry and their feathered friends. Stop by the Redondo Beach Marina on the 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to participate.
Aveeno Haircare is hosting a beach clean-up event on Monday, April 22nd from 1 to 3 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to swing by the community in Venice Beach and do their part to remove all trash from the area.
